-- About Category 5 Cables --
Category 5 or Cat5 cable is used for computer
networks to connect a computer to another computer or networking device. The
Cat5 cable uses twisted pairs of cables to carry the signals through the cable. It can also be used to carry other signals such as
telephony or video. People commonly use this type of cable in their homes to connect high-speed Internet modems to their computers or wireless
routers. High-speed Internet modems are usually used with Direct Subscriber Line or DSL Internet service or Cable Internet service. Cat5
cable is normally used with
ethernet type networks.

Advanced Information
- 10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX Ethernet connections require two cable pairs. 1000BASE-T Ethernet connections require four cable pairs.
- Most Cat 5 cables can be bent at a radius approximately 4 times the diameter of the cable.
- The maximum length for a category 5 cable is 100 meters. If a longer run in required then a
repeater is required.
- Each of the four pairs in a Cat 5 cable has differing precise number of twists per metre based on prime numbers to minimize crosstalk between the pairs
